Hardwood floor repair at a house

Cary Hardwood Flooring repairs damaged hardwood floors in homes across Cary. We replace boards that are cracked, stained or soft, and we make the repair blend in with the rest of the floor.

What we repair

We fix deep scratches and gouges, boards that have split or cracked, and dark stains from pets or plants. We also deal with boards that are loose, boards that squeak when you walk on them, and gaps between boards.

When only the finish is worn, we may tell you that hardwood floor refinishing is the better job, or a screen and recoat, where we lightly sand the top coat and put a fresh coat of finish over it.

How we replace a board

We cut the damaged board out in pieces, so the boards around it are not harmed. Then we fit a new board of the same wood and width into the space and nail it in place.

Next we sand the new board level with its neighbors and put on stain and finish to match. Before we call the job done, we'll walk you over to see the patch.

Why boards move and gaps open

The U.S. Forest Service's Forest Products Laboratory says wood takes on moisture from its surroundings. It says the moisture left in wood tends to come to balance with the humidity of the air around it.

So we look at the whole room before we fix a gap or a board that has lifted. If the cause is damp air or a leak, we'll tell you, because a repair made before that is fixed will not last.

Water damage and soft boards

The EPA says it is important to dry water-damaged areas and items within 24 to 48 hours to prevent mold growth. It says to fix plumbing leaks and other water problems as soon as possible.

We check the boards near sinks, dishwashers, outside doors and pet bowls for soft spots and dark stains. For a larger leak or flood, see our water-damaged hardwood floor repair page.

Repairs on engineered floors

A U.S. Forest Service Forest Products Laboratory study says engineered wood flooring is made of several sheets of solid wood, called veneer, bonded together with glue under heat, pressure or both. On engineered hardwood flooring, we check how thick the top layer of real wood is before we sand a repair.

Dust and older homes

OSHA, the federal workplace safety agency, says wood dust becomes a possible health problem when sanding and cutting put wood particles into the air. We close off the room we're working in and cover doorways and air vents with plastic.

The EPA says that if your home was built before 1978, it may have lead-based paint, and the older the home, the more likely it is. It says any renovation, repair or painting project in a pre-1978 home that has lead-based paint can easily create dangerous lead dust. We'll ask when your house was built before we quote.

What changes the price

We price hardwood floor repair for your house once we've looked at the floor, and you get that quote in writing.

We set our price by how many boards need replacing, how easy it is to find matching wood, and how much sanding and finishing the patch needs. We also count in any work under the floor to stop squeaks or loose boards.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • Which boards will be replaced, and how many.
  • What wood the new boards are, and how they will be matched to the old ones.
  • Whether the patch gets sanded and finished, or the whole room.
  • What causes the damage, if it's known, and whether that is part of the job.
  • How dust will be kept out of the rest of the house.

Questions about hardwood floor repair in Cary

Do I need a permit to repair a hardwood floor in Cary?

The Town of Cary lists replacing floor and wall coverings among the jobs that don't need a building permit. If you are unsure whether your job needs one, the town says to call its Inspections and Permits Department on 311 inside town limits or (919) 469-4000.

Can you match my old boards?

We bring samples of new wood to compare with your floor in your own light. If you have spare boards left from when the floor went in, we can use those.

Will the repair show?

We stain and finish the new boards to bring them close to the old ones. If a full room refinish would hide the patch better, we'll tell you before we start.

Can you fix a squeaky floor?

Yes, we can often stop a squeak by fastening the board tight to the wood layer under it. Where we can reach from a crawl space or basement, we may work from below.

Can you fix just one board?

Yes, we can replace a single board, and we still check the boards around it for the same damage.

What about the humidity in my house?

For mold control, the EPA says to keep indoor humidity below 60 percent if you can, and ideally between 30 and 50 percent. We'll tell you if the air in your house looks like the reason your boards are moving.

What happens to leftover finish and rags?

The Town of Cary says household hazardous waste should not go out with your ordinary trash, and it lists turpentine and other flammable materials among those wastes. We take our own leftover finish, thinners and used rags away with us when the job is done.

Which towns do you cover?

We repair hardwood floors across Cary, plus Morrisville, Apex, Holly Springs and the other towns we list on this page.
