Hardwood floors for Cary homes

Cary Hardwood Flooring lays new wood floors, sands and refinishes worn ones, and fixes boards that have cupped (curled up at the edges), cracked or soaked up a leak. We work all over Cary and in the nearby towns listed lower down.

It starts with a visit. We walk the rooms, check what's under the floor, measure, and talk through the wood, the board width and the finish with you. Then we write up a quote.

Choosing the wood

Solid hardwood flooring

The solid hardwood flooring we fit is one piece of wood from top to bottom. We lay it in living rooms, bedrooms and halls.

Engineered hardwood flooring

The engineered hardwood flooring we fit has a top layer of real wood glued to layers below it. Before you buy, we'll tell you how thick that top layer is.

White oak flooring

We fit white oak flooring for owners who want a plain, even grain under a light or a dark finish.

Hickory flooring

We fit hickory flooring for owners who like a rustic look, with color that changes a lot from one board to the next.

Wide plank flooring

We fit wide plank flooring in open rooms where you want fewer seams and a calmer look.

Patterns

Herringbone floors

For herringbone floors, a pattern of short boards laid in a zigzag, we cut each board to fit. It takes us longer than straight rows, so it's often kept to a hall or an entry.

Parquet flooring

We lay new parquet flooring, small blocks set in a pattern, and we also repair old parquet where blocks have come loose.

Refinishing and color

Hardwood floor refinishing

With hardwood floor refinishing, we sand the old finish down to bare wood and put new coats on. We do it for floors with scratches, gray patches and worn paths.

Hardwood floor staining

We do hardwood floor staining after sanding, if you want the whole floor a new color. Ask to see test patches on your own boards before we stain the lot.

Screen and recoat

If the finish looks dull but the wood isn't damaged, we may suggest a screen and recoat instead. We lightly sand just the top coat and add a fresh one, without sanding to bare wood.

Repairs

Hardwood floor repair

We do hardwood floor repair for squeaks, gaps, deep gouges and boards that have to come out. We try to match the new boards to the old.

Water-damaged hardwood floor repair

Our water-damaged hardwood floor repair starts after the leak is fixed. We look at how far the water spread and which boards need to come up.

Stairs and new floors

Hardwood floor installation

Our hardwood floor installation covers single rooms, whole floors and additions.

Hardwood stairs

We fit hardwood stairs with new treads (the part you step on) and risers (the upright part), so the stairs match the floors they join.

Carpet to hardwood

For carpet to hardwood jobs, we pull up the carpet and pad, check the floor beneath and lay wood in its place. If we find old hardwood under there, it may only need refinishing.

Fumes from stains and finishes

The EPA says paints, varnishes and wax all contain organic solvents. It says these products can give off chemicals while you use them and, to some degree, while they sit in storage. The EPA calls these gases volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. It lists eye, nose and throat irritation and headaches among their health effects.

The EPA also names lacquers and finishes among the household products that contain formaldehyde, a gas with a strong smell. Its advice is to increase ventilation when using products that give off VOCs, and to follow the label carefully.

So ask us which finish we plan to use and what its label says about fresh air.

Got old cans of thinner in the garage? The Town of Cary says ignitable wastes (things that catch fire easily), including turpentine and other flammable materials, should not go in your ordinary trash.

What to get in writing

Questions about hardwood floors in Cary

Do I need a permit for new hardwood floors in Cary?

Usually not. The Town of Cary lists replacing floor and wall coverings among the jobs that don't need a building permit. If you are unsure, the town says to call its Inspections and Permits Department on 311 inside town limits or (919) 469-4000.

Should I refinish my floor or replace it?

We look at the boards first. If they're sound, we'll usually suggest refinishing. Any that are cupped, soft or stained deep into the wood, we'd replace.

Can engineered hardwood be sanded?

We measure the real wood top layer before we quote for sanding one, and we'll tell you if we wouldn't sand it.

Which areas do you cover?

We cover all of Cary, plus Morrisville, Apex, Holly Springs and the other towns listed below.
